For this
osteological guide thirty well known and abundant fish taxa have been chosen as
they most likely are expected to be present in archaeological samples. The
guide helps with the identification of archaeozoologists, ichthyologists or any
other trained archaeologists in the field, but it does not preclude the use of
“hardware“, that is a comparative collection. The identification of fishbones
usually is carried out by comparing the morphology of the bones directly with
the fish skeletons of known species and size in a reference collection. |
